Just as it’s impossible to wake up with fully built abs without a record of consistent sit-ups, you can’t expect to wake up one morning with the brain of one of the greatest writers of all time.

Great copywriters are avid readers. When writers read, they don’t read to be freed from the guilt of not reading.

They read like an archaeologist, intentionally searching for what makes the copy successful.

Daily, you should read published copies by prominent and successful writers like:

  • Gary Hilbert
  • Eugene Schwartz
  • Joe Sugarman
  • Robert Collier

Get yourself in the shoes of their customers and find out what makes you tick while reading those copies.

Analyze the copy, reproduce it to make a better copy out of it and brilliantly lift/copy the strategies used in crafting the topics to improve on your subsequent project.

Sounds like plagiarism right? Maybe. But if you’re not copying, you’re not a copywriter.

2. Write content for self-assigned projects daily

What is a heart without a beat? What is a copywriter who doesn’t write?

To internalize the strategies and technical aspects of copywriting, you shouldn’t only read, but also write. You will have to get your hands dirty.

Devoting your time to write daily will help you build your copywriting muscles in terms of speed and quality.

This is also a proven way to avoid writer’s block. You can’t wait till when you have a project before you practice. That’s dangerous!

3. Analyze your copywriting

If you’re a good editor, you’re bound to produce high-quality copies. Once your copy is ready, you should take the responsibility to proofread it.

When you proofread as a copywriter, you are not just searching for the grammatical errors. More importantly, you’re checking if your copy will do the work it was designed to do.

When you analyze your copy, don’t just read it in your mind, read it out loud. You can give it to a few people to read and get feedback from them.

4. Connect with your target audience

Read a new article, learn about a new word or anything to exercise your brain in an unusual way.

Sometimes you find ideas you can borrow when you learn something entirely different from your field.
